Attack on Titan opens on a world threatened by Titans, huge and monstrous humanoid beings that seek to eat humanity to extinction. The first volume focuses on Eren Jager and those close to him, having enjoyed 100 years of peace inside the many towering walls of their city, as tragedy strikes.
The artstyle features varied and detailed linework, often with very dark or layered strokes. Characters can look 'off model' at times, but the art excells at making the action and atmostphere stand out incredibly well.
The story is set up well, giving the reader a great idea of how cynical and cruel the world is; building the home of the characters you will get to know as the story progresses. Not only that, but the first volume also defines the characters very strongly. On top of that, Attack on Titan shows incredible bursts of action, letting the spikes of adrenaline the characters feel almost seep through the page. It additionally adds little bits of intrigue, some of which you might not even notice in the rush of the fast pace.
